Perception Is Reality: Fact or Fiction – Part 1©

If I must choose between righteousness and peace, then I choose righteousness.” – Theodore Roosevelt

America’s strategy on the War on Terror.  Military strategists now have the theory that Iran is aiding and a bedding Iraqi insurgents throughout Sunni occupied territory in its provinces. Their reasoning, Iran’s geographic location coupled with the prospect that Iran’s nuclear capability is also on the rise and suspected talks between the gateway country (Iran is - to some in military circles- considered an entryway for Iraqi insurgents by allegedly allowing them passage into Afghanistan thorough Taliban sympathetic, Sunni occupied territories ) and North Korea.  They also believe that a military withdrawal out of the region now will embolden terrorist because at that point Afghanistan will be 2 – 0 versus Superpowers (The Former USSR  being the first and The United States of America tentatively being the second). Therefore these are the reasons “ the suits” in Washington have apparently have no strategy for withdrawing our troops from the war torn region anytime in the near future.

This most recent war on terror is pretty much forcing our military to adapt “new” tactics.

Carl Von Clausewitz said it best:

“ Never engage the same enemy for too long because he will inevitably adapt to your tactics.”

This is one of the several reasons why the U.S. is constantly having to change up the methods they use to pursue and combat insurgents.  The only problem with this mode of thinking in my opinion is that the U.S. – for the most part - is adhering to age-old combat techniques and the antiquated articles of the Geneva Convention while the enemy submits to an entirely different authority. Combating full scale Guerilla Warfare has never been the U.S. Military’s strong suit (the conflicts in Korea and Vietnam as well as the current conflict in Iraq and now Afghanistan lay testament to that). Not to mention the issue of poor planning and Intel, questionable levels of troop armament and protection, and the “win at all cost” mentality of policymakers in Washington (Safe here at home in their air-conditioned luxuriously furnished offices) some of whom have never nor will ever see combat. There are some individuals that believe that any victory is a good victory regardless of the costs. Their perception is that the loss involved with obtaining the victory is worth it and this perception is their reality. To even justify their position they have began to coin the phrase “Perception is Reality.”  Experience has taught me that loss appears more acceptable to those that feel as though the have nothing to lose. However, I do not subscribe to this school of thought. Reality is reality.  I personally subscribe to the “it is what it is and that is all that it is” school of thought. I think that is up the street and around the corner from the school of hard knocks (two schools that I feel we must all attend in order to obtain the core characteristics one needs to be sympathetic or apathetic).

Now don’t misconstrue my opinions as being unpatriotic or unsympathetic to the plight our great nation finds itself in. I honor our troops sacrifices regularly. They have a level of courage that is indescribable. I once heard that being fearless comes from being absolutely terrified but willing yourself to that next step in spite of your fear.  Our troops do that every single day. Their courage and fearlessness inspires me to do what others say I can’t do, my spirituality not withstanding.

Perception is not reality. If you were to watch the news day in and day out, the media would have you to believe that there is a drive by on every corner and we are winning the war on terror. The war on terror is not only fought on the battlefields of some country a world away. The war on terror is being fought in the hearts and minds of the families and friends that have to live daily with the prospect that someone they truly love may not return to them the same person they were when they left or if they will even return at all. The war on terror is also fought in the hearts and minds of those that lost love ones in not just the September 11th attacks on the World Trade Center  but also in the hearts in mind of every single solitary person that witnessed that horrific display of  hatred manifested. Our lives were forever changed by the events of this tragic day. However, the world witnessed firsthand America’s resilience. Thousands began to enlist into the U.S. Armed Services to join in the war on terror. Seven years later, we have yet to bring the “orchestrator” of one of the most horrific attacks in U. S. History to justice. Justice……… that is a word I am losing more and more faith in every day, especially as of recent. Today’s form of Justice appears to have a price tag. One that the average man or woman unfortunately can’t afford.  Not to mention that it appears that our government has no interest in what we – the common people’s -  opinions are anymore. However, Washington’s disinterest with the voice of the very people that enabled them to have their plush comfy offices and their multimillion-dollar campaigns began way before there was ever a shot fired in Iraq but I’ll just concentrate on more current developments for now. For example, there is evidence that we could have captured Saddam Hussein during the U.S.’s first occupation of Iraq. Yet we withdrew the troops as they were mere miles away from the Iraqi dictator for reasons unknown. The implementation of the Stop-Loss and Forward Operating Point Initiatives in both Iraq and Afghanistan respectively, and the continuous rise of the prices at the pump. All the while our elected officials make these grandiose speeches and as awe inspiring as they may be still leave the American public very skeptical as to the level their sincerity.

Yet these are the very people that subscribe to the “Perception is Reality” principle. Policymakers never truly feel the impact of the decisions that they make. They never have to endure combat. They never have to worry about deciding whether they are going to put Gas in their cars or food on their tables. They never have to worry about caring for the wounded (both physically and mentally) upon their return from defending their country’s freedoms abroad. Healthcare? Please…. don’t get me started. That’s a whole ‘nother blog in and of itself. Their perception is that the enduring spirit of the American People will see them through whatever challenges may arise. Now that is very idealistic but not all that realistic. Patriotism does not pay the bills, put food on the table, pay hospital bills, college tuition, or put gas in the tank. Money does. The perception that implementing an economic stimulus package would make everything all right in the world while idealistic was a band-aid policy at best. I’m actually still waiting to see some personal effect from the Stimulus Package. I guess if I was a Wall Street broker or a Fortune 500 CEO my pockets would be straight. It seems that Wall Street most definitely got hooked up while the average “Joe” or  “Jane” on Main Street is still waiting for their piece of the pie.  What we truly need is the eradication of politics as usual.  What we need now are leaders that understand the meaning of integrity. What we need now is leadership that understands what it means to accept responsibility for their actions. We need leaders who will take ownership for past mistakes and press on to honestly correcting them. We need leaders who understand the meaning of accountability and responsibility. I came up old school. I came up on the tail end of a period where a person’s word was their bond. A period in which a person keeping their word counted for something and when respect was truly earned and not freely given.

Perception seems to be some people’s reality. Well, it’s definitely not my reality and if you have any type of common sense and spiritual discernment… it’s not your reality either.

When We Are Patient ©

And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience; and patience, experience; and experience, hope; and hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.
Romans 5: 3-5

Patience is definitely a virtue. As I always say, life is all about choices. The quality of life we lead is directly influenced by the choices that we make. The determining factor of whether or not what we desire is worth waiting for is basically the value we place on the object of our patience.

It is always important to remember that almost everything that is worth anything has to be obtained through some type of sacrifice. Whether that is holding off on buying that new home, copping that new whip, going on that shopping spree, deciding to hold off on strolling down that aisle in marital bliss with “that one” that you are not all that sure about, etc.

The God we serve is a God of timing. Ecclesiastes 3 states that there is a time and a place for everything. Patience contributes to our calm and a healthy lifestyle. Patience contributes to OUR trustworthiness.

Therefore with that being said when we are patient:

  • We see God at work in our lives

  • We develop a strong testimony to others of God’s faithfulness

  • We are able to achieve any objective

  • We make wise, timely, and profitable decisions

  • We have God’s favor

  • We develop the strength to endure suffering
(Don’t blame God or anyone else. Don’t be bitter. Wait Patiently)

  • We build strong relationships

  • We can be used by God to help others

  • We are able to see how people are saved as a result of our personal witness

  • We are able to encourage people to grow in the Lord

  • We are able to rescue people going in the wrong direction

  • We can see God faithfully answer our prayers

  • God will protect us from stressful and difficult situations

  • We grow in our Spiritual Maturity

  • We maximize our potential

  • We obtain serenity

  • We experience feelings of contentment, joy, and thanksgiving

  • We position ourselves to receive God’s best

The War Within ©

“For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of  the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.”
Ephesians 6:12-13

There is a war within us all whether we wish to acknowledge it or not. There is an ever waging war within us with a battle on practically every plain of the human existence:

The Easy way vs. The Hard way
Morality vs. Immorality
Salvation vs. Damnation
Right vs. Wrong
Good vs. Evil
Life vs. Death

Yin and Yang.....

In Chinese philosophy, yin and yang (also yin-yang or yin yang, 陰陽 yīnyáng "dark—bright") describe how seemingly opposite or contrary forces may actually be complementary, interconnected, and interdependent in the natural world, and how they may give rise to each other as they interrelate to one another. Many tangible dualities (such as light and dark, fire and water, expanding and contracting) are thought of as physical manifestations of the duality symbolized by yin and yang.  (From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia)

At any given moment during our lives we are faced with a choice. Life is all about choices. The quality of life we lead depends upon the choices that we make. I have definitely made my share of bonehead decisions and reaped the consequences for every single one of them (Some choices I am still reaping the consequences for). Nevertheless, Life is simple. You make choices and you don’t look back because once the choice is made and the deed is done there is no taking it back..

A wise man once told me that regret is nothing more than an excuse to feel sorry for yourself, because at one point the very thing you now regret was at one time the very thing that you wanted or asked for. Needless to say that once I heard that and it sank in I never saw the need to ever have a “pity party” ever again.

There is a war within. One catalyst is the war between true spirituality and institutionalized religion. The battle for your soul waged by Almighty God and satan. The War within. The choice of submission vs. opposition to domination in every aspect of your life (Your job, your home, your relationships, your mind, your heart, your world).

The world we live in was founded and populated with almost a built in aggression quotient. The strong victimize the weak, the meek suffer at the hands of the proud, the sacrifices of the righteous are enormous, and the educated are punished for the actions of the ignorant. A vicious cycle that has claimed many a dream, many a goal and objective…… many a life. But to what end?

The casualty rate from all the battles we wage against the enemy is extremely high. Don’t get it twisted. Wherever there is a war there are casualties. My personal casualty toll has been enormous.  My casualties have included my health, my family, my “friends”, many a material possession (which are temporal anyway), many relationships and many a dream. The enemy has taken so much from me and be not deceived; the enemy is cruel, relentless and has no respect of persons. Eventually the war within takes it’s toll. It has definitely taken its toll on me. However, to quote one of my biblical heroes:

“Though he slays me, YET I will trust in him.”

There’s a war within... and I’m a frontline soldier. Ready for war. War has been the story of my life. Constant battles waged against the enemy. Battling to protect my family, my friends, my mind, my heart, my soul and everything that is near and dear to me from the enemy’s onslaught. The war within us all does take its toll on us all but at the end of it all it is necessary. The battles we wage help to shape and mold us into who we are truly supposed to be. These battles build character, integrity, accountability, patience, compassion and empathy, and believe it or not it bestows upon the combatant a since of serenity.

Serenity? Wars grants serenity? I’m sure you over there saying this cat is trippin’. In my opinion spiritual warfare grants serenity because in the midst of turmoil, your faith grows. In the midst of strife, patience grows. Anybody that has ever been through a “wilderness experience” can tell you that once you decide that it is out of your hands and you turn everything over to the “One” that can deliver the victory, there’s a certain peace (a sense of serenity) that comes with that. It is then when you discover that God has the final say and that it is never over until He says so.

It’s even in His word...

“And we know that all things work together for good to them that Love God, to them that are called according to his purpose”

Purpose. “To them that are called unto his purpose.” God’s purpose. Nobody said that God’s purpose for our lives, God’s will for us was easy. However, God’s will is perfect as long as we don’t interfere with the “process”.

This is where the conflict within us comes into the play the most. The very catalyst for the war within us all. According to the Word we are not to lean unto our own understanding. Yet we do, time and time again. We have at one point or another all been guilty of this (myself included) sometimes prolonging conflicts that God only intended to be short in duration. Our disobedience and pride can turn a minor skirmish with an enemy into an all out battle. Trust me. I know all to well how to make a bad situation worse through disobedience to God’s will for my life. All because I didn’t follow the Chain of Command  -The Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.

It is only when I recognized my “place” -That one was for you, Ken - and played my position with the Almighty that he delivered me from the hands of the enemy... sometimes just when I thought all was lost. For me, knowing my “place” simply means submitting to the will of the Most High. I thank Almighty God for the war within. It means that He’s there, fighting with me (sometimes fighting for me). If there’s one thing that this ever present war within has taught me,  it has taught me to never go to war without the proper equipment and weaponry. To never start a battle that you are not willing to see to its conclusion. My war within has also taught me that the enemy does not always wait for you to take the offensive. Sometimes the enemy brings the battle to you. It is during these times when your faith is tested. We are not to allow ourselves to be victimized. We are not to allow individuals, organization, corporations, governments, diseases, etc oppress us. We are to defend ourselves and as long as we stand on the truth and God’s word, (putting Him first in all we do) we can not and will not be defeated.

Like my father used to say: “

You might not start the fight ... but you damn sure better finish it. Let them know that you mean business no matter who it is and make sure that they will think twice about ever fooling with you again.”

In closing, I leave you with this....

The war within us all will never end.

The final battle will not be fought until we close our eyes for the last time and leave this earthly realm. However, we do have choices. God granted us all free will and a conscience. These are very effective weapons bestowed upon us to wage war with the enemies of God (anybody that is an enemy of the truth, righteous, and morality is an enemy of the Most High) and these are just some of the weapons in your arsenal. You only need tap into them.

As for me, I have made my choice. I will not be defeated. Now it’s time to make your choice and hopefully… prayerfully… when the smoke clears we all will stand victorious on the field of battle.
